The Gut-Brain Axis: How Digestion and Mental Health Are Connected

There is a reason we talk about gut feelings. The enteric nervous system, the vast network of neurons lining the gastrointestinal tract, is so complex and so independent that it is often called the second brain. 

It does not just digest food. It communicates constantly with the brain above, influencing mood, stress response, cognitive function, and emotional regulation.

This bidirectional communication is what scientists call the gut-brain axis. And it is increasingly understood as central to mental and emotional health.

What the Research Shows

The gut microbiome, the trillions of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms living in the digestive tract, plays a direct role in producing neurotransmitters. 

Approximately 90% of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut, not the brain. Disruptions to the microbiome have been linked to anxiety, depression, brain fog, and chronic fatigue.

Stress travels in the other direction too. Psychological and emotional stress directly affects gut motility, permeability, and microbial balance. The relationship is a loop, not a one-way street.

Signs the Gut-Brain Axis Is Out of Balance

The signs are often easy to dismiss individually but telling when seen together. Persistent bloating or digestive discomfort. Low mood that does not respond to the usual interventions. Brain fog, fatigue, or difficulty concentrating. Heightened anxiety, particularly around food or digestion. Poor sleep.

If several of these feel familiar, the gut-brain axis is worth paying attention to.

What You Can Actually Do About It

The good news is that the gut microbiome is responsive. It shifts with diet, sleep, stress levels, and lifestyle, often more quickly than people expect.

A few evidence-supported starting points: prioritise diverse, fibre-rich whole foods over processed ones, since microbial diversity thrives on dietary variety. 

Reduce chronic psychological stress, which directly disrupts gut permeability and microbial balance. Prioritise sleep, as the gut and brain both repair and regulate during rest.

Limit unnecessary antibiotic use, which can significantly deplete microbial populations. 

And consider fermented foods such as kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut, which introduce beneficial bacteria directly into the gut environment.

Targeted probiotic and prebiotic supplementation can also support recovery, though the research is most robust when these are used alongside broader lifestyle change rather than in isolation.

Why It Matters for Deeper Healing

Deep therapeutic work — whether somatic, transpersonal, or expanded-state — places real demands on the nervous system. A gut that is inflamed, depleted, or dysregulated cannot fully support that process.
