The Phoenicians and later the Carthaginians considered Ibiza sacred ground, associating it closely with Tanit, a goddess of fertility, protection and the moon. Temples and shrines were built in her honor.
For centuries, the island functioned as a site of pilgrimage rather than pure commerce.
Long after those civilizations receded, the tradition of the curandera, the local folk healer working with herbs, ritual and intuitive knowledge, persisted quietly across Ibiza’s rural interior.
These were the island’s original therapists in a sense, tending to the community’s physical and emotional wellbeing using methods passed down rather than formally taught.
Their presence is a reminder that Ibiza’s relationship with healing did not arrive with modern wellness culture. It was already here, generations deep, embedded in the land and its people.
Es Vedrà and the Island’s Old Mythology
Off Ibiza’s southwest coast rises Es Vedrà, a steep limestone islet that has accumulated more myth than almost any other point on the island. Sailors once linked it to sirens. Some have associated it with lost Atlantis.
Others describe unusual compass readings near its base, though these claims are folkloric rather than scientifically established.
What matters less than the specific stories is what they represent collectively. A long, consistent human instinct to treat this island as a place where the ordinary rules loosen slightly.
Whether myth or magnetism, Es Vedrà has functioned for centuries as a symbol of Ibiza’s deeper current, the one running beneath the surface tourism.
The Magnetic Island
Ibiza is sometimes described as sitting at a particularly active geological point, occasionally referenced alongside talk of unusual electromagnetic properties in its rock formations.
These claims circulate widely in wellness and spiritual communities, though they remain largely anecdotal rather than rigorously measured.
What can be said with more confidence is the effect many visitors report. A sense of being unusually open, unusually able to feel things they normally keep at a distance.
Whatever the cause, the island has a long track record of catalyzing exactly the kind of internal shift that brings people here for a residency rather than a holiday.
From Pilgrimage to Party
Ibiza’s transformation into a nightlife capital did not erase its older identity so much as bury it under decades of a different kind of tourism.
The 1960s and 70s brought an influx of artists, free thinkers and early seekers drawn to the island’s openness, well before the superclub era reshaped its image entirely.
That earlier wave never fully left. It simply moved to quieter parts of the island, away from the ports and the noise, continuing much as it always had.
